- Salary - Clerk Grade 1/2, Base Salary ($70,694 - $76,857pa based on full time), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

Your role
The purpose of this role is to provide administrative and para-legal support to the Public Defenders' team, offering a unique opportunity to develop legal skills and knowledge in criminal law. You will assist in legal research, collaborate with legal professionals, and gain valuable experience in both legal and administrative tasks. This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to build a career in criminal law while supporting a vital public service.
What you’ll do
As part of the Public Defenders’ team, you will support a range of legal-related projects, conduct legal and policy research under supervision, and assist with administrative tasks that help the team deliver quality services.
You will also:
- Undertake legal and policy research and analysis.
- Assist in the delivery of legal-related projects and tasks.
- Provide administrative support to the team to ensure smooth operations.
- Collaborate with Public Defenders and administrative staff to deliver quality services.
- Work as part of a collaborative team, where open communication and shared responsibility are key.
What we’re looking for
- Currently studying a relevant university degree (5th Year Law student)
- This role is open to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only.
- The Department considers that being an Australian Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification for this role in accordance with Sections 14 and 21 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and under Clause 26 of the Government Sector Employment (General) Rules 2014.
- Proven ability to deal with challenging and confronting legal material involving serious criminal offences.
As an Identified role, this position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons, Australia’s First Nations people
Where a position is identified, an applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification under the exception in Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

Confirmation of Aboriginality form
or
Written confirmation from 2-3 Aboriginal organisations within the community in which you live/work, which addresses the three criteria listed below:
- is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
- identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
- is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
