Your role
Youth Justice, New South Wales (YJNSW) is in a period of significant reform, and is committed to delivering improved services. We will continue to adapt our service system to better meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, and communities, in accordance with Closing the Gap, Target 11 and the Closing the Gap priority reforms.

As the Aboriginal Senior Project officer within the Practice team, you will develop, manage and implement a range of projects to build capability in Youth Justice staff to deliver evidence based and innovative programs and interventions for Aboriginal youth. To research and develop resources for Youth Justice staff and funded agencies based on what works principles and best practice to promote positive outcomes for young people.
What you’ll do
- Develop and manage a range of culturally influenced/co-designed projects in resources, programs and training for the continuous improvement of service delivery by division staff and commissioned services to develop staff skills and capabilities increasing their confidence and awareness of the needs of young people in line with strategic direction.
- Manage and oversee major aspects of project management and implementation, including monitoring project plans, coordinating resources, managing budgets, and ensuring service design activities are inclusive, respectful, achieved on time and to quality standards.
- Undertake analysis and provide guidance to staff in the delivery of evidence-based interventions.
- Provide leadership, advice, and support to enable culturally sensitive and respectful engagement and co-design with Aboriginal staff and communities, and non-Aboriginal staff to develop innovative initiatives to better service young people.
- Provide timely advice and communication to key internal and external stakeholder networks including government and non-government organisations, to ensure consistency of program direction and reporting.
- Provide high level advice and support to regional staff and managers to meet service delivery outcomes and ensure consistent service delivery.
- Prepare a range of project related documents for key stakeholders as required, including status updates, reports, budgets and discussion papers.
- Seek out and maintain key internal and external stakeholder relationships based on open and regular discussions and feedback for effective engagement, planning, co-design and implementation.
What we’re looking for
- This is an identified position and only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons (see notes below for further information).
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience.
- Current NSW Working with Children Check clearance for paid employment.
- Travel in metro and regional areas.
Appointments are subject to reference checks. Some roles may also require the following checks/ clearances:
- National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014

- is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
- identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
- is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.
In addition to meeting the above essential requirements the successful candidate will also desirably possess strong working knowledge and skill around issues facing justice-affected young people and assessments and interventions to promote change within individuals, their families, and communities. Strong working knowledge of how culture and community can be used to promote change amongst young people, their families and communities.
