Expressions of Interest are now invited from Aboriginal people interested in being appointed as a member of the AHO Board.

  • Location: New South Wales
  • Remuneration calculated on an annual basis will be paid to eligible Board Members.

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

The Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) was established in July 1998 after the Aboriginal Housing Act (1998) was passed by the NSW government.

 

 

Established under the Act, the AHO Board’s objectives are to:

 

  • provide advice to governments about adequate housing
  • advocate housing related matters on behalf of the Aboriginal community of NSW
  • provide strategic direction for sustainable quality housing for Aboriginal people in NSW
  • develop strategic alliances with key stakeholders, in particular, the Aboriginal community, government and non-government agencies
  • review the AHO's performance against strategic plans and directions
  • develop and uphold a culturally appropriate, professional, and mutually respectful working relationship between the Board, the Executive and staff of the AHO
  • develop and uphold a professional and mutually respectful AHO governance model embracing the role and responsibilities of Regional Aboriginal Housing Committees (RAHC)

 

Qualifications and Knowledge/Experience

 

  • Aboriginality and demonstrated credibility within the Aboriginal community.
  • Understanding and demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal communities.
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more the following areas is highly regarded: accounting and finance; legal, regulatory and governance; communications; and risk management.
  • Membership of any current or previous boards.
  • Formal qualifications and professional memberships.

 

Behavioural Capabilities

 

  • High level of confidentiality, discretion, and judgment
  • Professional conduct and demeanor
  • Highly effective communication skills.

 

AHO Chairperson and Board Members do not act as a representative from any specific community or community organisation.

Assessment and Checks

The assessment panel will convene toward the end of May. All applicants recommended to the Minister will be required to undergo a number of checks including insolvency, fraud and criminal records. Appointment to any NSW government board or committee is dependent upon the outcome of these checks.

 

Time Considerations

Board Members will be expected to give priority to the work of the Board and make the time commitment necessary. The position of Board Member is a commitment of at least one (1) day per month. This commitment will involve actively participating in and contributing to the work of the Board and have a focus on achieving the Board's key objectives.

 

Term of Appointment and Remuneration

The term of appointment is for a period of up to four (4) years, subject to Ministerial and Cabinet approval. Remuneration calculated on an annual basis, will be paid to eligible Board Members as per the Classification and Remuneration Framework for NSW Government Boards and Committees.
