Your role

 

The Casework Co-ordinator is part of a multi-disciplinary team and is responsible for supporting Aboriginal participants in the Youth Koori Court to successfully complete their program.  You will get the opportunity to work in a therapeutic court setting, supporting young Aboriginal participants.  You will assist the Court to develop and maintain collaborative working partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander specific services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, and other government and non-government service providers.

 

The Casework Coordinator helps young Aboriginal people participate in the Youth Koori Court process.  The role is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the delivery of support services by other agencies that have been identified to assist the young person complete the program.

 

The role sits within the Specialist Court team in Aboriginal Services Unit in the Transforming Aboriginal Outcomes Division.

 

What you’ll do

 

The Casework Coordinator works with members of the inter-agency Court Team in the case management of Aboriginal participants, facilitating referrals, co-ordinating service provision and advocating on behalf of participants.  You’ll need to work collaboratively with case managers and services involved with Aboriginal participants, to ensure their meeting their obligations to Aboriginal participants and provide advocacy when needed.

 

You’ll be required to participate in pre-court meetings to provide advice to the Youth Koori Court and interagency teams on culturally relevant interventions for Aboriginal participants, recommending strategies to assist participants’ rehabilitation and program completion. 

 

You’ll collaborate with Youth Koori Court team to share information, co-ordinate service provision in line with Youth Koori Court directions, referring and/or facilitating entry into available education, treatment, cultural support or rehabilitative programs or social welfare support services.

 

You’ll work in a hybrid environment, where you will be based in Surry Hills Children Court, as well as moving within the community as required providing support to clients across the Youth Koori Court footprint.

 

The candidate will be working primarily within Aboriginal Services Unit however will be working closely with the Youth Koori Court key justice agencies at Surry Hills for example Aboriginal Legal Services, Youth Justice, Police Prosecutions etc.

 

What we’re looking for & Essential Requirements

 

  • Aboriginality - typically all or the majority of the work of an Aboriginal identified role will involve the development and or delivery of policy, programs and services which impact on Aboriginal people and or involve liaising directly with Aboriginal people and communities
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (diploma or higher) in social work, welfare, psychology, criminology, education or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Current NSW Working with Children Clearance (only required if successful)
  • A current driver’s licence (unrestricted) and willingness to travel between Parramatta and Surry Hills Children’s Courts.

 

In addition to the essential requirements above listed, we’re ideally seeking applicants with experience in supporting Aboriginal clients and their families with practical supports to address any barriers to their participation in, and completion of, the Youth Koori Court program.

 

The ideal candidate will have experiences working in specialist courts, children’s court and working with Young People. Will be Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander with a WWCC.

 

As an Identified role, this position is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons, Australia’s First Nations people.

  • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and
  • is accepted as a such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

Casework Coordinator is often required to communicate with vulnerable Aboriginal people and their families to explain complex information during assessments, case planning or general community supervision. Can you provide an example where you had to communicate with Aboriginal young people and their families and what approach you used to explain the information and how did you know you were successful or not?

Casework Coordinator in this role is regularly required to work with multiple community based services and NGO’s (Non- Government organisations) to support Aboriginal clients and families within their agreed action and support plans. It is essential they are across what is available in their community and have a working relationship with those services. Are you able to explain your previously created a network of appropriate services in the community and how you have maintained a positive working relationship?
