- Employment type – Temporary position (up until Feb 2026) – Full time (35 hours)
- Salary – Legal Offer – Grade 4, Base Salary ($139,862 – $142,554), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading
Your role
Reporting to the Principal Registrar of the District Court you will be responsible for providing high level technical advice to the judiciary and court users to ensure the effective case management of matters in the District Court Civil jurisdiction. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the judiciary and play a key role in the court's operations, supporting the effective administration of justice in a dynamic and high-pressure environment.
What you’ll do
As part of the District Court team, you will provide legal advice and guidance on procedural matters, preside over hearings, and facilitate case management. You will conduct mediations, directions hearings, and call-overs to support case resolution.
You will also:
- Ensure that orders, directions, and requisitions made in the determination of legal applications comply with Acts, procedures, rules, and relevant legislation, and are made in a timely manner.
- Conduct mediations, directions hearings, and call-overs with parties and legal representatives to facilitate effective case disposal.
- Preside in various Registrar’s courts to facilitate effective and efficient case management within the District Court.
- Provide accurate, complete, and timely advice on the interpretation of laws relating to matters within the District Court's jurisdiction, assisting the public and legal profession.
- Provide procedural advice to clients and Registry staff to ensure quality court documentation and adherence to District Court practices.
- Use computer systems effectively to enter, retrieve, and collate data.
- Assist the Judicial Registrar by presiding in the General List in an acting capacity when required by the Chief Judge.
- Deal with court applications and provide procedural advice in a high-pressure environment, including the Duty Registrar service.
- You will work as part of a dedicated team of professionals who prioritise excellence in service delivery, and you will be based in the vibrant Sydney District Court office, located at John Maddison Tower, 86 Goulburn St, Sydney.
What we’re looking for
- A sound knowledge of the District Court’s procedures, rules, and relevant legislation.
- Proven track record in providing high-level legal advice and case management.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for presenting complex legal information.
- Admission (or immediate eligibility) as a legal practitioner in NSW.
